The Big Bed by Bunmi Laditan and Thomas Knight

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

From the creator of the Honest Toddler blog, The Big Bed is a humorous picture book about a girl who doesn't want to sleep in her little bed, so she presents her dad with his own bed―a camping cot!―in order to move herself into her parents' big bed in his place. A twist on the classic parental struggle of not letting kids sleep in their bed.

We open up on a scene reminiscent of The Godfather (think Don Corleone in pigtails) as a little girl says those dreaded words, "We need to talk about the big bed." From there, the conversation takes a turn that grows more humourous with each page turn.

This book is chock full of fantastic elements such as Thomas Knight's vivid illustrations which bring heart and humour, and the concept of turning the big bed conversation on its head.

Have I talked about the humour? It is what makes The Big Bed by far one of my favourite picture book reads. However, quite a bit of it will probably fly over the heads of your little ones. But there is still enough left over for children to love.

Verdict

A great read for parents, and a colourful one for children.
